Mozilla Firefox may becoming the most popular browser in Linux world but these are also some competitors such as Opera, Konqueror, Google Chrome, Epiphany and others. The above browser has similar function and quite nice to be used on a standard PC. Unfortunately, as a modern and complex application, all listed browser need a fast, modern computer with standard modern hardware, such as minimum 256 MB of RAM. If you trying to run one of these on the older hardware, the result may vary but most of them will running slow, even on 256 MB of RAM. Google Chrome may run faster than Mozilla Firefox but overall working with modern browser on an older PC is very inconvenient.

The older hardware usually used for a few application or dedicated for one or two service which do not need much resources. Browser may be needed for managing web administration. Supporting all the Web standards may not required, rendering most pages correctly, much faster and require less system resources are the most important key points. Such programs usually don’t serve CSS, JavaScript, or more complicated HTML elements.

Actually, older hardware isn’t the only factor to use lightweight browsers. People may choose to use lightweight browser even on modern hardware, only to get high performance and faster browser experience. GUI or text mode environment, operating system configuration and personal preferences are others factor why lightweight browsers has a unique position in modern computing.

Below are some lightweight Linux browsers for Linux you should consider for fast browsing experience :

1. Midori

Midori (緑, Japanese for green) is a web browser that aims to be lightweight and fast. It uses the WebKit rendering engine and the GTK+ 2 interface.

Features

Full integration with GTK+ 2

Fast rendering with WebKit

Tabs, windows and session management

Flexibly configurable Web Search.

User scripts and user styles support.

Straightforward bookmark management.

Customizable and extensible interface.

Extensions such as Adblock, form history, mouse gestures or cookie management.

Installing Midori on openSUSE should be easy with One-Click-Install feature on openSUSE Build Service link.

Both engine use Smarty framework based on PHP code. Although Smarty built from PHP engine, it has different style in code writing than another CMS based on PHP like WordPress. Smarty using their own tags that will be parsed on their engine, so adding Javascript or PHP code can not be directly written in the related tpl file (an extension for Smarty template).

If you wish to add a Javascript code like Google Adsense or a PHP code into Smarty template, use the following tips :

Open your related tpl file and use {php} and {/php} tags to include the PHP file

{php}include('/home//vavai/vavai.net/myphpfile.php');{/php}

Please note that I would prefer to use absolute path and not the relative path instead.

Open your related tpl file and use the {literal} and {/literal} tags to add the Javascript code. Place your Javascript code inside literal tags as shown on the following example :

{literal}{/literal}

On the sample #1, I would prefer to include the php file rather than write the PHP code directly on Smarty file. It will make a code a lot easier to manage, clean, easy to understand and we have a flexible way to add or remove the related file.

Google is my preferred search engine for a long period. Google provide better search result than their competitor in search engine world and they keep their performance for many years, but world may changes. Google may still the biggest search engine but the the result looks not so powerful anymore. Below are my disappointed moment while trying Google :

Google failed to pick the primary source as their preferred search result. As an example, try to search hardware or peripheral driver (network card, motherboard, modem dll), Google search may end up on various websites who need a membership or commercial benefit, instead of trusted vendor as original source. Below are the screenshot, showing my search result for dlink dfe-528tx driver. Google display opendrivers, driverskit, driverstock as top search rather than dlink original website.

Google may not entirely wrong. The problem may also on vendor side, their website may have an unfriendly layout for search engine and not really optimized for better search. Beside the vendor problem, Google should improve their performance, because the wrong result means a low quality of Google

Google search result end up on another search site. Sometimes I got a weird problem. My search result send me to another search site. As an example, my search query on Google display the search page on Google, but some URL references to a web page that display the search result also, but this time on their page. It seems that Google query result has been hijacked by another website. They catch the query and then automatically generate a page based on the query.

Quo vadis Google?

I’m not a web designer nor web programmer but I’m a web design lover. I often browsing the web only for finding good design as new idea to develop a brand new website. With a fewer knowledge upon web design, I always use professional service to do what I mean regarding website development. Blog popularity and the development of it’s themes & templates helped me a lot for finding another good design with cheap or less price.

Nevertheless, how if I want to design my personal website with all of stuff closed with my requirement without worried about technical design ? Is this possible to use some application to build a professional web design with less knowledge ? Website builder is an answer for my requirement.

Website builder is an application for building instant website without worry with technical design. I have an experience with popular website builder called Microsoft Front Page in the past but I’m unhappy and not really comfortable with it’s quality. The result was quite standard. The wizard itself was smart enough to fit with my requirement but the feature are too limited.

Yesterday I accidentally found a new application tools for create website. called BlueVoda. It’s a windows based website builder. I’m installing the application inside Linux openSUSE over CrossOver Office professional

Installation process only need a few step. In a few minutes later, I could accessing the application and starting build web design.

Although it’s the first time I’m using BlueVoda, the instruction was smart enough and clear. Drag & drop wizard guided me for designing my first website by my own hand.
I’m waiting this for a long time. I have some good tutorial (according to myself, huh ) written in 2004-2008. The tutorial written with Open Office 1.3 and 1.4 and converted into PDF for better distribution. I provide it for free (which somehow inspired me to building Indonesian openSUSE community). I want to make an update to the tutorial regarding some software update but I don’t want too many changes and complicated task. I need an easy way to re-convert PDF document into Doc or RTF and then edit it with my Word Processor.

I have trying and using some PDF converter, including Adobe Acrobat, PDFEdit and some open source application to convert my PDF document but all the result doesn’t make me happy.

Yesterday, I found new beta service for converting PDT to Word or RTF document called PDFtoWord provided by some guys behind the Nitro PDF Professional. PDFtoWord is an online service for converting PDF into DOC or RTF document and claims that it was The Most Accurate PDF-to-Word Converter. Is this true ? Well, it’s time to checked it whether it’s true or just a marketing gimmick.

I signup the beta service with signup code lifehackers (I heard this service from Lifehacker) and a few minutes later, I got this email :

Hi,

Thanks for applying to join the private beta for our new (and free) PDF-to-Word conversion service. The private beta program is already full, however we’ll be expanding the beta program to include you in the next few days.

We’ll be in touch shortly with details on how you can participate in the beta.

* Learn about the PDF-to-Word converter

In the meantime, for in-depth information on what our converter can do and how it works, read our detailed feature list.

http://www.pdftoword.com/features.htm

Maybe the service is not available for me now .The story ended .

But, wait, I got the second email a day later and confirmed that I could try their service because they expand the service to new beta tester.

The service provide a good navigation for their main service. Just upload your document, choose DOC or RTF file type and then provide your email address. PDFtoWord will processing the document, and then send the converted document into our email. The processing time may vary depending our document size but they limited the maximum source document size is 10 MB.

I only need a few time for processing about 1 MB document which contains some picture and text. The result was quite satisfied. I think the result is the best ever of converted document from PDF to doc or RTF. Some picture has broken alignment and some font has incorrect type but it’s all gathered successfully and text converted without problem. Although I must edit the document to make it more better, it’s enough to make me happy.

It’s the source document :

and it’s the converted document :

Another result from Lifehacker article : PDF-to-Word Converter Pulls Readable Text from Scanned Images [Conversion]

If you want to try their service, signup using beta invite code : lifehackers. Hope the beta code tester still available to be used.

Information : PDFtoWord i’s a public and online service. If you think you would worried to send the confidential document into public service, do not do this. Please take care your decision as long as you must taken any risk regarding the threat to your document.

Beside this point, PDFtoWord has a good policy for protecting your privacy. Checked it out here.

Printing from Linux host to the printer on Windows host sometimes quite complicated due to the share and permission setting. We often find this situation if we trying to migrate our system from Windows to Linux, or designed a hybrid environment and mixed a Windows system with Linux system.

The easiest way maybe by using Network Print Server and printing with TCP-IP printing protocol. You must buy a network print server or designed a host as network print server. If you have attached the printer into Windows system, you may using another trick : Using LPD protocol. This method is easy to setup and you do not need to buy anything.

We need 2 step to make this possible. Initial phase is preparing Windows to provide LPD protocol and the second phase is add printer on the Linux host.

Preparing Windows Host :

Install printer driver and test local printing.

Go to Setting | Control Panel | Add-Remove Program

Choose Windows Component

Install (give a thick on) Other Network File and Print Services

Click Next and following the wizard

Activating the services so the protocol will be activated during Windows boot. Go to Setting | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services. Enable the TCP-IP Print Server service

Share the printer

Write down your Windows IP Address. You could checked this by typing IPConfig on the command prompt

Preparing Linux Host

Add printer using KDE Control Center or Personal Setting or Desktop Setting

Choose LPD Protocol on the protocol wizard entry

Entry the Windows host IP Address and name of shared printer

Testing the printer

OpenOffice is the leading and most popular open source competitors to Microsoft Office beside another desktop application : Sun StarOffice, IBM Lotus Symphony and Built-in KDE KOffice. The latest version of Open Office, Open Office 3.0 released on October 13, 2008, after has been in development for the past three years. A few days after the announcement, Novell, a company behind openSUSE project also released their OpenOffice productivity suite based on standard OpenOffice 3.0, named as OpenOffice.org Novell Edition, currently available for Windows.

What is the different between OpenOffice Novell Edition and Upstream (community) edition ? Well, The community or upstream edition of OpenOffice.org lacks the enterprise support that is essential for business
customers . The community edition of OpenOffice.org also lacks some of the key features such as stronger
interoperability with Microsoft Office files and rich file import capabilities. Some of the missing import capabilities include Microsoft Works files, WordPerfect files and scalable vector graphics.

In fact, it would be a blessing in disguise with the Novell-Microsoft Agreement. The agreement give Novell a right and opportuinity to provide better support for key features on interoperability with Microsoft Office files and rich file import capabilities. If you have heard about Go-oo project which provide ‘future version’ of OpenOffice, the project was initiated by Michael Meeks, an engineer employed by Novell.

So, what is the benefit by using OpenOffice Novell Edition instead of community edition ? Below is the description about OpenOffice Novell Edition for Windows and the requirement. If you wish to use OpenOffice Novell Edition for Linux, try openSUSE

OpenOffice.org Novell® Edition for Windows* is a full productivity suite which provides word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing and database capabilities. With OpenOffice.org Novell Edition for Windows, enterprises can dramatically lower costs while gaining the key functionality of Microsoft* Office and interoperability with Microsoft Office file formats.

Key Features of OpenOffice.org Novell Edition for Windows OpenOffice.org Novell Edition for Windows contains enhancements and bug fixes, especially for interoperability with Microsoft Office and other word processing programs, that are not available in the standard edition. These enhancements include:

Microsoft Excel*: Compatibility: Improved Excel compatibility for certain built-in functions (e.g., CELL, INFO, INDIRECT), hyperlinks and filters, improved ergonomics, and support for “R1C1″ style addresses. Improved performance on certain text functions such as SEARCH. Natural sorting option in cell range sorting.

Excel VBA Macro Interoperability: OpenOffice.org Novell Edition eases the migration of many macros from Microsoft Excel. Although not all macros can be successfully migrated, this interoperability offers more than the standard edition, which does not support migration of macros.

Data Pilots: Data Pilots are interoperable with Microsoft Office PivotTables*. OpenOffice.org Novell Edition substantially improves the Data Pilot feature, making it possible to edit pilots after creation.

Enhanced Fonts: Licensed fonts from Agfa* Monotype* which are metrically identical and visually compatible with some of the key Microsoft fonts. This allows OpenOffice.org Novell Edition to match fonts when opening documents originally composed in Microsoft Office, and very closely match pagination and page formatting.

EMF+Support: The ability to render EMF+ formatted graphics

SVG Support: The ability to import scalable vector graphics.

Import File Formats: Microsoft Works, WordPerfect* text and graphics, T602 files, OfficeOpen XML, and more.

Groupwise® Integration:OpenOffice.org Novell Edition includes improved integration with ODMA (Open Document Management Architecture) services, for example for GroupWise. If you have the GroupWise client installed on the machine, OpenOffice.org Novell Edition will offer to open documents from GroupWise, or save documents in GroupWise.
